@nelizmastr and it was the weather’s fault for destroying the pilots visibility, and it was the pilots fault for disobeying the ATC, and it was the ATCs fault for having two jumbo jets on the airplane. No accident is one single person’s fault.
@kornweasel because of the crash i had no idea about the nuts bombed the airport until the video, so they defeated their purpose and caused the crash

Good point, but that’s not an excuse for the video to be distorted.
It’s absolutely fine that the video isn’t in widescreen, but what’s bad is that the video is distorted.
To avoid the distortion, the video should have been clipped instead of squashed.

Heck, it real ticks me off when documentaries avoid saying bad things about KLM and the pilot, because it was pretty much the culture of the company (becuase something must have made van zanten reluctant to want to just call off the flight, dispite being reguarded as the top pilot of KLM, and therefor probably less likely to get informaly punished for the costs of hotels for the passangers), and van zanten himself that contributed to the disaster.

Much like the Titanic. Mistakes that could have been avoided. Capt. Smith, was too cocky, it cost him his life on his last voyage before he retired. Such an awful tragedy.

I think that’s just a little presumptuous. The Lufthansa crew that once left London w/o clearance and came close to colliding, were in no hurry, and radiod back ATC to tell them that it wasn’t such a good idea to have been given clearance ! It shows anyone can be fooled even in the best of conditions. The real culprit in my view was the system. Bad policy to put 600 people onto an active runway, with no ground radar then use it as a taxiway. Who are we kidding?
There is a reason this docu has a pro Pam Am slant to it, they did nothing wrong! They followed the rules as best they could, the KLM captain committed a cardinal sin of piloting by NOT making damn sure they run way was clear. He just floored it.
In the end even if the controller was on there yelling DONT GO! DONT GO! it would not have helped, the KLM capt was totally out of touch with the situation, all he cared about was getting in trouble for the flying time thing.
Erma is such a sweet old lady. It is a shame she worked so hard to get that vacation only to have this happen to her. At least she survived though. RIP to the other 583.

First of all, although this is a free video, there is NEVER any excuse for a video to have Aspect Ratio Fail. Just as there’s NEVER any excuse for a video to have it’s red and green color channels swapped.
Second of all, you know what? I HAVEN’T watched this. I HAVE, however, watched a DIFFERENT upload (the one by ralphft) that is NOT distorted.
Third, right now, look at 8:31. Seriously, if you can’t tell that something is wrong with the picture, you’re an idiot.
first of all this is not a 1080i video, it’s just a free youtube movie. Second of all if you can’t stand it, don’t fucking watch it. And third if you get annoyed by something as a slightly out of order aspect ratio you need to get a life you worthless piece of sh*t, good day

The episode “Crash of the Century” is fantastic. However, I rated this video 1 star.
Why did I rate this video 1 star? In 3 words:
Aspect Ratio Fail
If you don’t know what that is, do a Google search and you can easily find a big article about it.
Look at 0:35. Look at how horizontally squashed this video is. It’s hideous — and for no good reason at all. I’m amazed that you can stand to watch it.
I will now go and find a version of this episode that is NOT squashed.
yes, a lot of series of events led up to this disaster, but the biggest and most avoidable mistake of them all was the KLM pilot going without the final clear.
